NINASAM TIRUGATA'S
AAKAASHABHERI
(Kannada)

2 Hours (with interval)

Aakaashabheri is a Kannada adaptation of Piyush Mishra’s Hindi play, Gagan Damama Bajau. Against the backdrop of the freedom struggle – the varied struggles – the play draws on the Punjabi tradition of Heer-Ranjha to take as its centre the story of Sohni waiting for her beloved Bhagat Singh’s release from prison. The story unfolds in historic episodes – on the larger canvas are the mammoth revolutions that take place; but it also zooms on to the young revolutionaries who are charged with patriotic fervour by Bhagath Singh and friends. The setting up of HSRA, the murder of Sanders as revenge to Lala Lajpat Rai’s killing, the assembly bombing, the protest against jail conditions are told with the intention of placing them as contextual responses to the social-political ethos of the times, rather than the straightforward telling of a story. The narrative does not merely intend to retell history, but in trying to trace the different ideologies and the various conflicts that were embedded in it, the play also hints that the time for a contemporary revolution has come. The play is performed as a musical, including many folk songs of North India.

Ninasam Tirugata :
Ninasam Tirugata, Ninasam’s rural itinerant theatre repertory, was established in 1985. The repertory is formed afresh every July and comprises of a group of 20 alumni of Ninasam Theatre Institute. This group rehearses that season’s plays, and travels all over Karnataka till the following March, after which the repertory is disbanded. The next July, Tirugata is formed afresh. Tirugata is a professional repertory, in the sense that all group members are paid – and they are paid equally. Every season, Tirugata tours 3 ‘classics’ across Karnataka – one Western, one Indian and one from the Kannada tradition. The tour occurs over 4 continuous months, with an average of one show for every 50 to 100 kms of travel. There are shows almost every day … roughly 120 shows in 140 days. Most of the shows are done in taluka towns or even smaller places – and the tour covers all districts of Karnataka.
