NINASAM TIRUGATA'S VENISSINA VYAAPAARA (Kannada) |
| |
2 Hours 30 Minutes (with interval)
16th & 17th century Europe which became the landscape for Shakespeare’s England is also the time and space in which the processes of the modern world as we understand it now took place. The seeds of the modern nation state were sown then itself. One can trace globalisation right back to those times, with the beginning of inter-continental trade. The two main strands of The Merchant of Venice are of trade and money transactions, and racial conflict. Apart from this, what seems separate but is something intrinsic to the story, is the business of love. The contemporariness of the story lies in the manner in which these different streams have been stitched together. On the one hand, there is a community that thrives on slapping interest on interest. On the other, there is a community that believes this is sinful, but has no qualms about selling goods for huge profit margins. These two perspectives also present themselves as two religious faiths, raring to take each other head on. Many are of the opinion that Shakespeare is not entirely unbiased in The Merchant of Venice and one sees an anti-Jew slant in him. But the fact that he ventured to write such a story of conflict itself is significant. And that’s probably what takes the reader back to the play again and again, with heightened intensity.

Ninasam Tirugata :
Ninasam Tirugata, Ninasam’s rural itinerant theatre repertory, was established in 1985. The repertory is formed afresh every July and comprises of a group of 20 alumni of Ninasam Theatre Institute. This group rehearses that season’s plays, and travels all over Karnataka till the following March, after which the repertory is disbanded. The next July, Tirugata is formed afresh. Tirugata is a professional repertory, in the sense that all group members are paid – and they are paid equally. Every season, Tirugata tours 3 ‘classics’ across Karnataka – one Western, one Indian and one from the Kannada tradition. The tour occurs over 4 continuous months, with an average of one show for every 50 to 100 kms of travel. There are shows almost every day … roughly 120 shows in 140 days. Most of the shows are done in taluka towns or even smaller places – and the tour covers all districts of Karnataka.
