NIRMAN KALA MANCH'S
BIDESIA
(Bhojpuri)

1 Hour 40 Minutes (without interval)

Nirman Kala Manch is identified by its most popular play, Bidesia There have been more than 400 shows of the play around India and in Veerganj, Nepal. The story revolves around a woman’s determination to get her wayward husband back, after he migrates to Calcutta in search of work and takes up with another woman. The production draws strongly on the folk singing/storytelling form of Bidesia, and has been instrumental in popularising both the form and Bhojpuri theatre.

Director's Note :
I first directed Bidesia, Bhikhari Thakur’s most popular play, in 1987. Since then, it has been performed more than 500 times. In this play I have resorted to various customs and practices of the eastern region as a theatrical tool. Bidesia was originally a folk song popular in the Bhojpuri region. In this form of singing, words like Re Bidesia, Re Batohia are repetitively used to create a region specific rhythmic pattern. I have mixed different folk forms to create a new one. As a heroine oriented tale on separation Bidesia holds special place for me. But it is not a favourite amongst women. It is popular among only man who developed it. All the artistes of Bhikhari Thakur’s play were male actors took on female roles. I asked my mother why women who sing all other types of songs do not have a liking for Bidesia. I was shocked when she replied that Bidesia is not socially acceptable. The feudal society does not accept its roughness. I designed the play in a new style, keeping all these elements in mind. The new form & structure of the play does not conform to the Indian contemporary theatre and our endeavour is to explore its possibilities. A three-hour play in the beginning, it has been gradually reduced to one hour & forty minutes. Come and celebrate this with us.
